A starting point for your budget

The Energy Saving Trust gives around £1,900 as an indicative air-to-air heat pump installation cost for a single room. Treat that as a planning reference: the model, property and installation route determine your written quote.

Start by listing the rooms you actually use. A bedroom that overheats at night and a home office used all day may need different schedules and capacities. Ask for a price for your priority room and a separate price for the complete project so you can decide whether to install everything together.

What changes the installation price?

Two quotes can cover different amounts of work even when they mention the same brand. Compare the exact indoor and outdoor model numbers, number of units and the agreed installation layout.

• Number of indoor units and their cooling and heating capacities.
• Pipe length, trunking route, wall penetrations and condensate drainage.
• Access to the outdoor unit, including scaffolding or lifting equipment.
• Electrical supply, isolator and any consumer-unit work.
• Making good, decoration, old equipment removal and waste disposal.
• Commissioning, controls, warranty registration and the total including applicable tax.

Calculate running costs with your tariff

Use electricity input, measured in kW, rather than the cooling capacity printed in the model name. Electricity used in kWh multiplied by your tariff in £/kWh gives the energy cost. A meter or supported energy-monitoring function is useful for checking real use.

For a simple arithmetic example, 0.6 kW average input for five hours uses 3 kWh. At an example tariff of 25p/kWh, that costs 75p. Those figures illustrate the calculation; use your actual consumption and tariff. Weather, insulation, temperature settings and hours of use all affect the result.

Get quotes you can compare

Send each installer the same postcode, room sizes, photos and preferred schedule. Ask them to identify anything excluded and explain the payment stages. Keep servicing and warranty conditions beside the installation price when comparing offers.

If a quote is above budget, ask what changes would reduce the cost: fewer rooms initially, a simpler pipe route or a different indoor-unit style. Ask whether the proposed system can support any later expansion before buying.
